ABOUT

NEWBEAN

CAPITAL

Newbean Capital is a registered investment adviser that manages early stage venture capital mandates on behalf of institutional clients. It has a particular interest in indoor agriculture, the practice of growing crops in warehouses, containers and greenhouses using hydroponic, aquaponic and aeroponic techniques.

Newbean Capital’s founder - Nicola Kerslake - has spent close to 20 years in real assets investments in Europe, Asia and the US. After spending time as a rated equity analyst at ABN Amro Hoare Govett in London, she led a team of equity analysts in Asia, achieving top 3 ratings in independent analyst rankings. In the US, she has managed hedge fund portfolios at a subsidiary of the Monitor Group and managed and established private equity and real asset platforms for SEI Investments. Her coverage sectors have included traditional and renewable energy, chemicals, water, agriculture, farmland, and forestland.

Nicola became interested in indoor agriculture thanks to her prior work in real assets investing, and Newbean Capital founded an events business – Indoor Ag-Con – in early 2013 to provide a meeting place for the then emerging industry.  After expanding the startup to the premier event in the industry, with events in Las Vegas, Singapore and the East Coast, Newbean Capital exited the business to three event industry professionals in late 2018, representing one of the few successful exits to date in the indoor agriculture industry.  Our indoor agriculture efforts are now focused on expanding access to capital for indoor growers, primarily through Contain Inc, a sibling company to Newbean Capital.

A graduate with honors of Magdalen College, Oxford, where she studied politics, philosophy and economics, Nicola also holds Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) qualifications. Her work has been featured in leading financial media, including the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times, and she speaks regularly at industry conferences.

OUR PROJECT

INDOOR AG CONSULTING

Occasionally, the Newbean Capital team works with companies on a consulting basis.  Our skill set is best suited to working with large corporates contemplating strategic investment or operational moves in indoor agriculture.  We draw on our database of indoor agriculture data and industry knowledge gathered over seven years of work in the nascent industry.  As our bandwidth is limited, we work with only a few clients, and do not engage where there would be a conflict of interest with either Contain Inc or other commitments.

OUR PROJECT

CONTAIN INC.

Contain Inc is a sibling company of Newbean Capital; we declare it as an outside interest each year.  It was founded following our observation that indoor growers lacked the financing options that their outdoor counterparts enjoyed. The Contain Inc team has since expanded to include leasing and finance experts, all focused on improving access to finance for indoor growers. It currently offers lease financing for a wide range of indoor agriculture equipment, such as, automation, grow systems, container farms, greenhouse structures, LED lighting, controls, and HVAC. Through its relationship with InterWest Insurance, it offers indoor ag-friendly insurance.
